David Yates

David started practising Aikido In August 1973 under Chiba Sensei with the Aikikai of Great Britain. He was promoted to first Dan in April 1984. David currently holds the rank of 5th Dan and is a Shidoin with the British Aikido Federation. David currently trains with the BAF under Kanetsuka Sensei and travels every year to Tokyo to train at the Hombu Dojo. He has trained regularly with the current Doshu and the previous Doshu, together with all the senior instructors at the Hombu Dojo. David has trained extensively in the UK, Europe and the USA.


David is currently the Vice-Chairman of the BAF and their representative to the British Aikido Board. He is a BAB recognised Senior Coach and coach tutor. David has also trained in Kendo and Iaido.


 
Rob Yates

Rob started practising in October 1973 and was awarded 1st Dan in July 1989. He currently holds the rank of 3rd Dan and is a British Aikido Board coach. Robert has trained extensively in Europe and Japan under the guidance initially of Chiba Sensei, the previous Doshu and the current Doshu. Robert has also trained in Judo, Kendo, Shukokai Karate and Iaido.

 
Simon McAsey

Simon began Aikido in 1981 at the age of 24, and has had the opportunity to study under many eminent Senseis during the proceeding twenty-five years.


He has attended seminars with the late Yamaguichi Sensei, the present Aikido Doshu (Moriteru Ueshiba), Endo Sensei, and many more. For the majority of this time he has mainly lived and practiced in the North West of England, but has also travelled to Japan, Greece, Holland, France and Germany in pursuit of a deeper Aikido appreciation. He is currently one of three assistant coaches at 'Wa Go Kan' Dojo, as a qualified British Aikido Board coach.


 
Caroline Smith

Caroline has been practicing Aikido since April 2004 and was awarded 1st Dan at Summer School 2009 which is her current grade. Caroline trains in Japan every year under the guidance of the current Doshu and the Hombu Dojo instructors. Caroline is a BAB recognized instructor and also trains in Jui Jitsu.

 


 
Sean Flynn

Sean started practicing aikido at the Wa Go Kan dojo under the guidance of Yates Sensei in 2004. Since then as well as practicing 4 times a week in Manchester, Sean attends many other dojos and aikido courses in the UK to further augment and broaden his understanding of aikido generally. This desire to gain a deeper understanding took Sean to Tokyo in 2007/08 for a year to train under the current Doshu and various other Shihan at the Hombu Dojo in Tokyo. Whilst there Sean achieved the level of Shodan. Whenever he can Sean also studies and trains under Yamashima Shihan (7th dan aikikai) who, as well as regularly attending morning practice under the current Doshu, runs both the Chioda-Ku and the Miname Tanaka dojos in Tokyo, Yamashima Shihan was a long time student of Yamaguchi Shihan (8th dan aikikai). As well as training as often as possible Sean furthers his learning of aikido by regularly facilitating practice on Saturday mornings at the Wa Go Kan dojo in Manchester.  In May 2010 Sean attained the rank of 2nd dan during a visit to Hombu dojo.

 

 


 
Wesley Bent

Wesley began practising Aikido in 2003. His current Grade is that of a 
Shodan, which he obtained in 2009. Wesley has been lucky enough to 
travel to Japan and train at the Hombu (The Headquarter’s of the 
Aikikai Foundation).  Wesley began his training in martial arts back 
in 1986. He hold’s the grade of Yondan in Ju-Jitsu and he has also 
trained in Judo and Jeet Kune Do. Wesley is a B.A.B recognised 
coach level 1. He is also the current vice-chairman of the Wa Go Kan 
Aikido Club.

 
Celia Tierney

celia

Celia began practising aikido in 2003 and is currently 1 kyu. She has taken the opportunities available in the UK and Europe to attend seminars with many high grade teachers and believes that variety is the spice of aikido.  Celia is a recognised BAB coach level 1and is heavily involved with the children and young persons aspect of aikido in the UK.

 
Phil Hadfield

phil

Phil has been practicing aikido from Oct 2003 and was awarded 1st Kyu Summer School 2009. Phil has traveled to Japan several times to train with and learn from Doshu and various other senior Hombu Dojo instructors. Phil attends many local and national courses. Phil is a BAB recognized coach level 1.
